Beams In Action:
BEAMS offers five primary ways for campuses to move toward these institutional goals.
- Information from NSSE:
Each BEAMS campus administers NSSE twice during the course of the project. One administration is funded by the project, the other by the campus.
- Designing action plans for initiatives to enhance student engagement and learning:
Each BEAMS campus participates in an AAHE Summer Academy which offers five days dedicated to developing an action plan. In preparation for the Academy, each institution decides to focus on a specific area and constitutes a campus team.
- Collegial support for implementing action plans:
Team members return to campus and collaborate with colleagues as well as AAHE and NSSE staff members to establish and sustain support for implementing the action plan. A mid-year meeting of campus representatives during the academic year following academy participation enables reporting on progress and offers additional opportunities to seek mutual support.
- Web-based support throughout Project participation:
AAHE's WebCenter offers sites for posting of progress reports, discussion of emergent issues during implementation of action plans, resources about topics pertinent to initiatives on campuses, and links to BEAMS campus websites and to additional resources.
- Opportunity to report nationally on campus initiatives and successes:
Project campuses have the opportunity at AAHE national conferences to report on initiatives and progress that emerge from their use of NSSE information and the campus's project activities. This reporting highlights the significant work at BEAMS institutions that foster student engagement, learning, and success.
