NSSE & FSSE Registration Now Open
Registration is now open for NSSE and FSSE 2011, beginning the twelfth survey cycle for NSSE and the eighth for FSSE. The registration link below permits registration for NSSE or FSSE individually or for both surveys.
As a reminder all Web-only NSSE administrations now survey all first-year and senior students for no additional cost. There have been no increases in NSSE or FSSE pricing.
Updated NSSE Survey Coming in 2013
Building on a decade of student engagement research, NSSE is excited to announce that a revised and updated survey instrument will launch in 2013. “NSSE 2.0” will undergo testing in 2011 and 2012, with no changes to the existing survey for institutions participating in those years. Enhancements for 2013 may include revisions to current questions, new survey content to complement existing items, and changes to one or more benchmarks. Proposed changes will be evaluated on their ability to improve and expand the assessment of student engagement, and to provide actionable results for institutional improvement.
While recognizing the value of continuity, these updates will ensure NSSE continues to provide colleges and universities with valuable, relevant, and actionable diagnostic information about the quality of the undergraduate experience. NSSE and Dillard University Partner for the Fall 2010 NSSE Users Workshop
Join us in the Big Easy for our fall users workshop which will be held on the Dillard University campus on Thurs.-Fri., Oct. 7-8, 2010. An online registration form, tentative schedule, and details on travel and accommodations are now available on the NSSE Web site, nsse.iub.edu/institute/workshops/2010/dillard/. We welcome session proposal submissions from institutions that want to share how they have used NSSE, FSSE, and BCSSE for institutional improvement, accreditation, accountability, or student learning initiatives. As added incentive, registration fees are waived for presenters. Please contact us if you have any questions about the workshop. We hope you will join us in New Orleans!
NSSE Researchers: Abstracts from AIR 2010
BrckaLorenz, A., Garver, A. K. (May 2010). Interactive technology and effective educational practices. Paper presented at the Association for Institutional Research 50th Annual Forum, Chicago, IL.
An examination of students’ use of interactive technologies (blogs, classroom response devices—“clickers”, collaborative editing software, etc.) showed that use of these technologies strongly relates to various forms of student engagement, particularly active and collaborative learning and student-faculty interaction. The most often used of these technologies was collaborative editing software, and the least often used were video games, simulations, or virtual worlds. Differences in frequency of use did not exist by various demographics such as age or enrollment status. The largest demographic difference showed that international students used these technologies more often than their US citizen peers.

An analysis of student and faculty responses about the frequency of use of a variety of technologies revealed differences in the kinds of academic technologies used in several disciplinary fields. Course management systems were used most often by students and faculty in all disciplines. Classroom response devices (“clickers”) were most often used by students in professional fields, and e-portfolios were most often used by students in education. Additionally, students report using collaborative editing software more often than faculty implying that students may be using this type of technology out of class to collaborate and complete assignments.

Next NSSE Webinar Offers Overview of FSSE
A free FSSE Webinar will be delivered by Tom Nelson Laird (Assistant Professor & FSSE Project Manager) on Tuesday, June 15th at 3 pm EDT. This Webinar will give representatives from past, current, and future FSSE participating institutions information about the administration process, data files and reporting, data analysis, and online FSSE resources. Webinar participants will learn about what to expect from FSSE and how to use their resulting data and findings to stimulate campus dialogue about improving undergraduate education.

NSSE Webinars are live, interactive sessions on various topics for faculty, administrators, institutional researchers, and other institutional staff that want to better understand and use their NSSE data. Typically an hour in length, with an allotted Q&A session, Webinars begin at 3p.m. Eastern time. Over 100 participants have registered for each of the three Webinars NSSE has hosted so far this year: Ideas for Encouraging Student Participation in NSSE, Using BCSSE Data for Faculty Development, and Program and Department Level Assessment. New Web sites for NSSE, FSSE, and BCSSE - Live by July!
We are pleased to launch updated Web sites for NSSE, FSSE and BCSSE! The new sites contain all the same information you expect, but with clearer organization to get to the resources you want more easily. We will also be launching innovative new resources designed to help you get the most out of NSSE data, including an Interactive data tool allowing Web site visitors to search NSSE results, and a database displaying examples of how institutions are putting NSSE data to use on campuses. Special Note: NSSE Pocket Guides - A Popular Tool for College Exploration
Did you know that more than 60,000 copies of the newly revised NSSE publication, A Pocket Guide to Choosing a College: Questions to Ask on Your College Visits, have been sent to admissions offices, high school counselors and independent college counselors who are intent on helping guide students and families decision about college choice? Given the increased use of the pocket guides, NSSE-participating institutions are encouraged to provide the "Student Experience in Brief" (provided in your NSSE Institutional Report) to prospective students and families.
Law School Survey of Student Engagement
2010 Results Released and New Director Announced
The 77 law schools that took part in LSSSE 2010 have just received their institutional results. On June 7, school contacts received copies of the Law School Report, which features school-specific findings and analyzed data reports that include comparative information schools can use to measure progress and gauge their performance. The Report also features user tools that LSSSE developed to help schools interpret and share their findings. We encourage participating law schools to contact LSSSE over the summer to discuss their findings, schedule a school consultation, or a campus presentation. We want to help you put your results to use!
LSSSE is also pleased to announce the appointment of its new director, Professor Carole Silver. Carole comes to LSSSE from Georgetown Law, where she has directed the Center for the Study of the Legal Profession. Carole’s copious experience in legal education includes faculty appointments at Northwestern Law and Chicago-Kent, along with a senior research associate post at the American Bar Foundation. In addition to her LSSSE duties, Carole will join the faculty at the Indiana University Maurer School of Law. Carole is the ideal person to guide LSSSE forward at this exciting time in legal education, and we are delighted to have her on board.
Strategic National Arts Alumni Project (SNAAP)
The Strategic National Arts Alumni Project is about to enter the third and final year of field testing. All nonprofit arts-accredited institutions will be invited to participate, with a registration deadline in early July. This year, SNAAP is expanding the cohorts of alumni to be surveyed, to include graduates from the classes of 2005 – 2009, 2000, 1995 and 1990. Thanks to the generosity of our funders, there is no cost to participate in this final year of field testing.
The 42 institutions that participated in SNAAP in the second field test in 2009 will receive their institutional reports later this summer. SNAAP staff will offer webinars for participating schools on how to interpret their results.
